Lascaux Bison

LascauxBison.FossilSand28.jpg

This is an interpretation of one of the Crossed Bison of Lascaux as I imagine it might have looked freshly painted 15,000 years ago. Iron oxide and black manganese paint are blown onto the stone, and the outline is emphasized by scraping lines (sgraffito) into the surface; the same techniques used by prehistoric artists.

Airbrush and sgraffito on a Arizona sandstone. This stone is called Fossil Sandstone.
The “fossils” are actually mineral patterns in the rock that look like plants.

Size  approx. 10" x 6.5”
